This week we got to choose an animal to write an animal report about. I choose the hummingbird.
Hummingbirds are part of the bird family and are omnivores. There are more than 350 known species of hummingbirds in the world.
Appearance
Hummingbirds are colourful , small birds. Hummingbirds have a long beak to reach into flowers and get their food. Hummingbirds have small feet which is used for perching only. Most hummingbirds have more than one colour of feathers.
Diet
Hummingbirds eat tree sap, nectar, pollen and insects. Hummingbirds beat their wings so fast they have to eat often because they use up all their energy. Hummingbirds have long tongues so they can get their food.
Habitat
Most hummingbirds live in the tropics.
Hummingbirds are found in the western hemisphere from South East Alaska to Southern Chile.
Reproduction
Hummingbirds lay 1-3 eggs. The eggs take 13-22 days to hatch and the chicks start to fly in 18 to 30 days. The oldest hummingbird lived to 12.
Conclusion
Hummingbirds are endangered because people hunt them for their feathers and destroy their habitat.
